NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is a sulfur-containing acetylated form of the amino acid cysteine, providing more stability and better absorption than cysteine alone. The health benefits from NAC are due to its anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and antioxidant properties. NAC is a potent antioxidant and increases production of the ‘master antioxidant’ glutathione, providing protection against lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress, and free radical damage.
As a precursor to glutathione synthesis, NAC increases glutathione levels in the liver, lungs, kidneys, bone marrow, and brain. Glutathione boosts immune cell (T cells and NK cells) function to fight viral and bacterial infections.
