Patient: 50-year-old registered nurse, Irish descent.

This patient came to my office complaining of chronic digestive upset. The problem seemed to start after travelling abroad in her thirties and she had never been well since. Her symptoms included gas, bloating, and had even progressed to the point of fecal incontinence. The severity of the condition was such that she never wanted to go anywhere without knowing if a washroom was close by. Because of the effect of the symptoms, she became anti-social and it contributed to the end of her marriage.

After going through a plethora of past test results from all her doctors and taking her off of her Imodium, we first tried to see if parasites were an issue. No change. Then I asked her if she had ever been evaluated for celiac disease. She said no.

We sent her for a blood test and anti-gliadin antibodies were positive. We took her off gluten and repopulated her gut with probiotics. Her condition completely went away. She couldn’t believe it.
